Thank God - They Are Finally Home

All 20 living hostages returned to Israel (TOI)
All the living hostages kidnapped and so brutally treated under captivity by Hamas terrorists have been freed, thanks to the valiant efforts of President Trump and his negotiating team. No one believed it would happen. Least of all Netanyahu’s critics (in both Israel and the U.S.), who believed he couldn’t care less about the lives of the hostages and was only interested in prolonging the war to retain power. They have all been proven wrong.

What made this event even more amazing is what came along with it: Hamas is required to disarm. And if they don’t, the president has promised to make it happen—violently, if necessary. And if they think the president makes idle threats, I have one word for them: Fordow. I don’t think they believe he’s bluffing.

The deal includes an international peacekeeping force that, for the first time, will not consist of UN troops. Who in the past have been far more sympathetic to Israel’s mortal enemies than to Israel itself. This will be a multinational force that includes American troops.

That is the basis for the ceasefire, which will hopefully be permanent - for the first time since Hamas took over Gaza. Another plus is that the deal has the support of key Arab states and much of Europe, including nations that have not been particularly friendly to Israel, such as Turkey.

I managed to watch most of the president’s address to the Knesset. It was preceded by speeches from three Israeli politicians: the Speaker of the Knesset, Yair Lapid representing the opposition, and Prime Minister Netanyahu. All of them represented their nation with great eloquence. Despite the obvious and often rancorous disagreements between them.

With respect to Trump and Netanyahu, it was, in many ways, a mutual admiration society. The respect the president and the prime minister had for each other was obvious. One of the president’s comments about Netanyahu was that ‘he’s not easy to negotiate with’. That was followed by, ‘That’s what makes him a great leader.’

Enmity between the two? Hardly. Trump just asked Israeli President Isaac Herzog to pardon Netanyahu, with the remark, ‘Cigars and champagne? Who cares?’

The entire Knesset event was a celebration of what the president accomplished. Something all the speakers seemed to believe would eventually lead to a true peace between Israel and its Arab neighbors, beginning with the Abraham Accords. It envisions a Gaza free of Hamas, a restoration of homes and infrastructure, and economic development funded by a consortium of wealthy Arab nations. This would give Palestinians in Gaza a measure of self-determination. But the words “Palestinian state” were notably absent. As mentioned, the deal was agreed to by important Arab states.

The idea that Netanyahu was forced by Trump to accept a deal he didn’t want is laughable. Something only the most cynical anti-Netanyahu critics would suggest. Always anxious to show discord and disunity between the two. The way each of them described their relationship makes it clear that nothing of the sort happened. If I had to hazard a guess, I’d say Trump was able to quickly convince Netanyahu that he would get what he wanted under the deal. And only then did Netanyahu agree.

If I understand correctly, Trump will be receiving the Israel Prize by near-unanimous agreement of the Knesset. That he did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize for what he has accomplished - while Obama got it for accomplishing exactly nothing - says more about the Nobel Committee in Oslo than it does about either Trump or Obama.

What will history say about Netanyahu? Despite what his detractors might think, I believe he will go down as one of Israel’s most consequential leaders. First, by steering his nation away from its socialist roots and turning it into one of the most productive free-market economies (per capita) in the world. And perhaps more importantly, through his victories over Israel’s most implacable enemies he may usher in the longed-for peace Israel has sought since its creation. If that happens, it will be the most pivotal moment in Israel’s history since 1948.

All that being said, the optimism I feel depends on whether Hamas truly disarms. If they don’t, the deal allows Israel to go right back in and finish the job. But they may not have to. Since the president hasbeen assured that Hamas will disarm under the threat that - if they don’t - the U.S. will force them to. Violently, if necessary. (Maybe that’s what Trump meant by “Hell to pay.”)

As always, the devil is in the details. But either way, things are looking pretty good right now. Who’d a thunk it a few weeks ago?

  1. Hostages home-in a deal forgetting anything else over 1900 Arabs jn custody including 250 serving life sentences for 20 hostages. See what happened s a result of Shalit deal. No other country would do such a deal as a stand alone-guarantees future worse problems. What happened to Chazal can't pay too much ransom for a hostage because of tikkun ol.am-just encourage morer taking. See how many Israeli troops died supposedly for 20 hostages want to give almost all terrorists their freedom Hamas would have agreed long time. Oh Bibi saying if Hamas still in power wed have lost war. Who already has returned and running security where Israel withdrew from. Big defeat for Israel agreeement-Bibi agreed because of Trump pressure especiallly after bombing Qatar a US ally with large US base there-Qatar more important to Trump than Israel-they have wealthier leaders

    1. while we have not yet heard from the other one afflicted with TDS, this one can always be counted on for deep insight into what is happening. Cannot wait to watch as the bright future unfolds in the new, restructured ME.

    2. I hope that a bright future happpens for Israel in ME-Trump has already paying dividends to Qatar for the airplane that he wanted. He of course, has family increase greatly as a result of Persian Gulf clountries or is it Arabian Gulf like Gulf of America.. Only, those afflicted with Trump Devotion Syndrome which neither me nor DSF have caught would believe that this pressuring of Israel was good for long range Israel's benefit. It is the model for all future Presidents how to order Israel around.

    3. I don't think DSF is as 'deranged' about Trump as mycroft is. Although he may hate him even more than mycroft, he is willing to give credit where credit is due. I believe he will do so here.

BTW. once again, I would once again ask that you post using either your real name or an 'alias' other than 'anonymous' so that there can be some semblance of consistency and order in the comments section of this blog,

    4. You must consider it a plus to have Trump Devotion Syndrome-where already it is quite clear that Israel was forced to stop war while not accomplishing its goals. Already Trump is saying Hamas keeeping agreement. Israel disagrees.

  2. It was BIDEN who set all this progress in motion; he deserves the Nobel prize.

    2. Starting with During Biden Administration about 110 hostages released, during Trmp lesss than 50. Compare protection of Israel against Iranian missile during Biden and Trump. Trump is certainly a bigger bragger

  3. During the Biden admin with far less give back the vast majority of hostages were released.

    1. Love or hate Trump, love or hate this deal, no one in their right mind would ever suggest that it could have happened under Biden (for which we must always write "Biden") and certainly not under Harris, who earlier this week explicitly bought into the "genocide" libel. It's almost certain no other Republican would have managed either.

    2. Agreed deal wouldn't have happened under Biden he wouldn't have ordered Bibi to agree to terms where Bibi signs terms that he lost the war..Bibi afraid of Trump-Trump has shown the way for future stronger pressure on Israel.

  4. Mycroft: you sound almost sad that the hostages were released!

Anywho, the price the Gemara was talking about was about money. Not people. Also, Israel won’t make the same mistake it did on Simcaht Torah. Had they not been asleep that day, this wouldn’t have happened.

    1. This is worse than money-letting murderers free-those who can attack again. Same tikkun olam problem exists these deals encourage more hostage taking. Terrorists know life sentence unlikely life-until next hostage deal. Maharam MeRothenburg example gets ignored all the time with disastrous results. At one time Israel was the leader in standing up to terrorists now they lead the world in how much ransom they'll pay with predictable results. BTW similar short term thinking led to Israel withdrawing from Lebanon because of 4 mothers demonstrations.

This is nonsense. The Nobel awarded last week is for actions taken from February 2024 until January 2025. In other words, the relevant time period ended 10 days after Trump took office.
The question is if he will win it next year. And in my opinion, that will largely depend on whether or not this current agreement holds.

    1. The Obama award was ridiculous, as it was also given toward the end of his first year.

    2. Agreed-it shows how much Trump Devotion Syndrome has taken over many of Orthodox bloggers-of course, the period was way over for this years prize-certainly, if peace gets accomplished will get a Nobel Prize-sadly more likely Trump will get a Nobel Prize for pressuring Israel-which he has done-due to Bibi's cuttting off other potential alllies he has np place else to go-when Israel continues to get pushed around. Israel not supplying Trump new plane Qatar is.

    3. Agree Obama Nobel was ridiculous. So far none worthy for Trump-get a genuine peace following roughly 20 points would deserve one.If awarded Nobel Prizes for bluster and high self opinion would have won one already.

  6. Israel got all of its war aims (except maybe punishing terrorists, but many have been killed during the war extrajudicially, and that was not an official war foal and Israel never intended to use legal process against the top people. )

They released from detention all those arrested after October 7 some to exile, which was something (exile was) Israel was not allowed to do before when it deported people to Lebanon and was forced to take them back. This collection of people is a mixed bag. Some could almost be considered were held tto trade.

The problem is that Hamas has not agreed to disarm and give up power. Quite the opposite, and Trump said it's OK with him (!!?) for awhile because he seems to have bought into the notion that the people Hamas is executing are al Qaeda or ISIS or the like. (even if some are, it's probably like Syria's new ruler)

There's something wrong with U.S intelligence or maybe it's just Trump believing what some country like Qatar is telling him.

This phase won't last long and then they will be confronted with the problem is getting Hamas to disarm.

    Things can go three ways:

    A) The war resumes., Even if Hamas forces fire at Israeli troops Israel will go slow and strive for awhile to prevent this from spiraling. Certainly as long as they are getting bodies back.

    B) The Hams zone being deprived of food and water until they surrender. Because it would be done by Arabs it will not be called genocide. (Israel will pull back in favor of the Board of Peace, not Hamas.)

    C) Gaza being divided into 3 zones:

    1) Israeli border zone

    2) North East Gaza, under control of Hamas.

    C) International zone. But some of these countries want a UN mandate which brings Russia and China into the picture. Trump may negotiate something if he wants to. I heard Indonesia promised 20,000 troops but also only a few hundred. Gulf countries are wiling to pay.

In Option C, the area controlled by Hamas will not be rebuilt and maybe not too much while it exists as a sort of Middle Eastern East Germany.
